Student Testimonials Vol.3
Great parental encouragement
TRAN KHANG THINH
Tran Khang Thinh, a seven year-old boy, received the “Five years ahead” award in 2012, for studying Math at a level similar to Grade 10 Math. In his journey to become an advanced learner, he welcomed the guidance of his Instructor and his Parents’ support, who have always guided his progress from his very first days in Kumon.

From a young age, Thinh was able to grasp new concepts quickly. Within preschool, he could recognize and remember the alphabet as well as numbers and could even count up to the number 100. By realizing Thinh’s high ability, his Parents decided to enroll him at Kumon to stimulate his potential further. He was studying Level F (Four operations with Fractions and Decimals) equivalent to Grade 6 Math even before enrolling to Grade 1. This was an amazing achievement for such a young student.
However, Thinh’s progress was not always an easy run. As he began to study higher levels, especially Level D (Vertical multiplication and division with 2-3 digit numbers/Reduction of fraction) and Level E (Four operations with Fractions and Decimals), Thinh faced some difficulties when having to solve problems which required him to write the immediate steps fully, due to his clumsy handwriting and low speed of writing.
When Thinh started to advance five years ahead of his school grade level, his father would spend time supporting his son’s studies, to help him better understand each new concept. When Thinh first studied geometric concepts (Pythagorean Theorem) in Level I, besides some funny stories, his father would draw pictures and use toys to describe the form of a square, an isosceles triangle and a tetragon.
Thinh’s parents shared that their son seemed to grow up with Math. After studying in Kumon, his calculation skills and concentration skills have greatly improved, along with his belief in himself. This helps him a lot at school and has highlighted to Thinh’s parents, the real value of the Kumon Method. During his Kumon journey, they were always willing to share Thinh’s difficulties in studying with his Instructor so that as a team, both parents and the Instructor could work together to find out the most appropriate learning way for Thinh in each level.
From the moment Thinh and his family knew about the ASHR qualifying levels for the Kumon Math Program, they were very eager and determined to set a goal. And soon enough, Thinh first reached five years ahead for studying Level F110 (Four operations with Fractions and Decimals) when he was about to join Grade 1. With his cheerful character coupled with his love for challenging himself and setting higher goals, Thinh hopes to become a Kumon Math Completer soon. For his future dreams, his goal is to become a doctor. With the skills gained in Mathematics and his positive attitude in learning, we are sure that Thinh will always be confident to advance and achieve his dreams with his parents’ great support.
Indeed, every child possesses boundless ability and it is our mission to unlock their greatest potential.
